Ever hear a song and no matter how hard you try, you just can't seem to get it out of your mind? That's what's happening with me right now.

A couple nights ago "There's Something About Mary" aired on one of the cable networks. It had been quite some time since I'd seen it and I happened to catch the tail end of it, including the main song that played over the credits and outakes. And since then, I simply cannot shake it, even having heard tons of other songs since then. For anyone unfamiliar with the song (it's a Golden Oldie) I thought I'd share it with you (below), though I think it really is a combination of the lyrics AND catchy rhythm that are what have been so addictive for me, rather than just the lyrics themselves. If you have a chance, give it a listen. In the meantime, enjoy the lyrics...

Build Me Up Buttercup
by The Foundations
(from the "There's Something About Mary" soundtrack)

Why do you build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup baby just to
let me down (Let me down)
And mess me around
And then worst of all (Worst of all)
You never call baby
When you say you will (Say you will)
But I love you still
I need you (I need you)
More than anyone darlin'
You know that I have from the start
So build me up (Build me up)
Buttercup
Don't break my heart

I'll be over at ten
You tell me time and again
But you're late
I wait around and then
I went to the door
I can't take any more
It's not you
You let me down again

(Hey, Hey, Hey)
Baby Baby
Try to find
(Hey, Hey, Hey)
a little time
And I'll make you happy
(Hey, Hey, Hey)
I'll be home
I'll be waiting beside the phone
Waiting for you.
Ooooo, ooooo

Why do you build me up (build me up)
Buttercup baby
Just to let me down (let me down)
and mess me around
and then worst of all (worst of all)
you never call baby
when you say you will (say you will)
but I love you still
I need you (I need you)
more than anyone darlin,
you know that I have from the start,
so build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, don’t break my heart

To you I'm a toy
But I could be the boy
You adore
If you'd just let me know
Although you're untrue
I'm attracted to you
All the more
Why do I need you so

(Hey, Hey, Hey)
Baby Baby
Try to find
(Hey, Hey, Hey)
a little time
And I'll make you happy
(Hey, Hey, Hey)
I'll be home
I'll be waiting beside the phone
Waiting for you.
Ooooo, ooooo

Why do you build me up (build me up)
Buttercup baby
Just to let me down (let me down)
and mess me around
and then worst of all (worst of all)
you never call baby
when you say you will (say you will)
but I love you still
I need you (I need you)
more than anyone darlin,
you know that I have from the start,
so build me up (build me up)
Buttercup, don’t break my heart

I-I-I need you,
more than anyone darling,
you know that i have from the start,
so build me up,
buttercup,
don't break my,
don't break my heart.

Wasn't it originally a Tom Jones hit? It is catchy, for sure.

Don't think Tom Jones ever did it. But a group known as The Foundations made it a hit.
